About

Concord Immigration Court Visit

November 18, 2024

A new immigration court was opened in Concord, California in February of 2024 and went fully operational with new cases in June of 2024. The new court’s sole function is to process deportation cases for immigrants who have residential addresses across 11 counties: Contra Costa, Solano, Madera, Fresno, Inyo, Tulare, Kings, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Mariposa, and parts of Alameda county. Because there is no right to appoint counsel in immigration court, many of these immigrants are fighting deportation alone.

The Contra Costa Immigrant Rights Alliance and the California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice launched the Legal Empowerment Initiative (“LEI”) to address the needs of unrepresented immigrants with cases before the Concord court. The program is a community-legal partnership that provides limited scope legal services as an entry point to accompaniment and other pro se services that increase odds of success in immigration court.
